All my life I’ve had a passion for words and stories, but as I grew up and ventured out into the world, I also discovered that I had a passion and talent for helping other to hone their work.
For most of the last two decades, I’ve edited exclusively for the award-winning horror magazine Rue Morgue and my now-defunct imprint Burning Effigy Press, accumulating nearly a half-dozen Bram Stoker nominations for our work.
However, my life circumstances have changed, which has thrown me deep into the editor-for-hire market. But my loss, potentially your gain.
Below, you’ll find a list of the services for I provide. For a quote (complete with sample edit) and/or to check my availability, please contact me at monica (at) libraryofthedamned.com.
Editing Services
Manuscript Critique
Exactly what it sounds like. A detailed big picture look at your manuscript, which will alert you to any plot, characterization, pacing or other problems.
First Novel Boot Camp (a.k.a. copy-editing plus)
All the features of the standard heavy copy editing package (see below), but with extra time and care devoted to problem areas and improving one’s craft. This package is specifically designed for early career novelists who feel they have a project ready for copy editing (but also think it might require a bit more work in a few areas).
I call this package “boot camp,” because it not only sees me specifically tailoring our editing process to your needs (and skill level), but will also focus on challenging you to overcome any bad writing habits you may have developed. In general, I’m much more available for one-on-ones with my Boot Camp clients, and if the next book you write isn’t better for it, I’ll eat my red pen.
Copy Editing
Whether you are self-publishing or submitting to agents or publishers, I can help your work shine with a thorough copy edit. With over fifteen years of professional experience, copy editing is both my love and specialty. I’ve always felt there’s something really magical about seeing a story/book reach its full potential and it thrills me to be part of the process. I’m currently taking on both heavy and light edits (rates vary). Reach out for a quote and sample edit, and/or to check my availability.
